I'm directing a musical revue next year for a community theatre...Trying to pick something good. I want to do side by side by sondheim, but people think it won't sell...so what GOOD musical revues would you suggest that can have maybe 20 people in it that will SELL tickets to an older sophisticated crowd?
What musical revue to do?ballet
Do want to do a preexisting musical revue or do you want to create your own?
Preexisting:
Elegies (by William Finn)
Infinite Joy (by William Finn)
Songs for a New World (by Jason Robert Brown)
Create your own:
You could do a revue of a specific composer (perhaps chose your favorite Kander %26amp; Ebb songs to put into one show)
You could do a revue of a specific time period (perhaps a dedication to the 1980s or to the Golden Era of Broadway)
You could also do a revue of specific types of musical theater, perhaps one dedicated to dance shows (Damn Yankees, Chicago, Songs %26amp; Dance, Movin' Out, etc) or a revue dedicated to jukebox musicals (Movin Out, Good Vibrations, etc)
You could also to a revue of the progression of musical theater. Select songs from Porgy %26amp; Bess and Showboat all the way up to Wicked and The Color Purple.
Or you could do a revue of musicals that began outside of the US. Perhaps a dedication to British musicals is your thing (Les Mis, Miss Saigon, etc).
Or you could do a revue of off-Broadway shows! Chose songs from Bat Boy, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, etc.
Revues are so much fun! I'd love to do one soon!
