What is the appropriate dress when going to a Broadway musical?

I bought tickets for me and my partner to see Phantom of the Opera down in NYC for the holidays. I have no idea what to wear to a theatre show. A dress? Slacks and a nice shirt? What should he wear?

My husband and I usually dress up a little when we go to theatrical events. For us, that means a little dressier than Sunday clothes. I'll wear a simple, but elegant black dress, and he'll wear dark pants, a sport coat, and a tie. We could probably go a bit more casual, but I love any excuse to get a great new dress!

GO naked.
A nice dressy pant suit type causual yet elegant in a dress down look and keep it simple yet you might wear a coat trimed in fake fur as real fur is out , as the weather is cold and high boots are a fashion statement this year for sure if you decide to wear a skirt,,,,He should wear dress slacks and by all mean black socks I hate to see white socks,,,You should look as if you came together and blend and have a great time,
Anymore, these days, it really doesn't matter. We were in NY, bought tickets in Times Square and went to see "Cats" dressed the way we were....jeans, sneaks and T-shirts.

So, dress any comfortable way!!
black and white attire
I go to the Theater all of the time in NYC.....Have seen the Phantom 3 times.

Wear a long Black Dress, a trace of Make up....Gold Hoop Earrings....You will look stunning.

Sing For me.....A line from the Phantom.

Have a great time.
wheal i think that something simple but classy and comfortable would go just fine

and its not what you are wearing its

how you we're it
Dress comfortably in layers. Slacks and a nice shirt with a dress sweater would be good (and comfortable shoes). The times I have gone to NYC I have worn a women's dress suit and nice flats.
You should dress up for the occasion, as you should when attending any theatre event, unless it's fringe theatre, etc. Just because other people may be low-class in their attitude in attending live theatre doesn't mean you should be. Dress NYC fine, not Omaha casual.
You arent seeing "Cats", You are seeing a real show. The appropriate dress for a Broadway musical, for a man is a suit and tie, and for a woman, is the kind of dress you would typically wear to a semi formal event, like a wedding or event with a date in a suit. It is not uncommon for men to dress in tuxes and women to wear gowns, btu it's not necessary to be that formal.

have fun
Not too formal...not to casual. Let's say business casual. Nice shirt or skirt, a dress is fine as long as it's not a prom dress or a gown. A male should wear dressy pants (dockers or kahkis or anything but jeans. Actually, you could wear anything and you would still be admitted but you paid for a nice night out so do it up.
black and white shirt and pants or dress, and i think he should wear a nice tux.
